Bass 4 the babes.

Name: Simone
Alias: Smokey / Smoke Dog (@smokey_cph)
Pronouns: She/her
Location: Copenhagen, Denmark
Influences: Musically I’d have to say the UK, but I’m not too excited about borders(!) boxes, categories or purist ideas when it comes to music. There are a ton of people that I am inspired by both personally and musically; my girls and my crew: Mama Snake and Solid Blake, and ofc all the bass babes MSJY, re:ni, Darwin, Yeahlena, CCL, Mia Koden, DJ Voices, Mad Miran, Ciel, Niks, Bitter Babe, Azu Tiwaline, mi-el, Roza Terenzi. And my local Copenhagen icons; N.E.GIRL, Gavnlig, Daniel Savi, Lille Høg, Heste Jente, Lyra Valenza, Clara Lucifer, Mbizo, Deb Foam, Cecilie Nørgaard, Nina Marie Lange, 2000F, Purple Rave Club, Cirkeline, Téa, Fruit DJ + Drift Radio and the crew and many more!
Affiliations/Residencies/Projects: Earlier this year I started in the position as Head of Music at Strøm Festival, which is one of Copenhagen’s finest institutions for electronic music. It’s such a privilege to be doing this, it’s wild! Before that I spent one and a half years mentoring and tutoring at Future Female Sounds DJ academy. It’s an organization that works towards inclusion for femmes, trans and non-binary people in the field of DJ’ing. So many good femme and queer DJ’s in Copenhagen, oopft.

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community:. Acknowledge your privilege, share your knowledge, open doors for those who need it. Reach out and don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice. Be kind and be brave (is this perhaps a Cinderella quote??)
Be in it for the music, the art and the creativity of it. Keep digging and exploring. Anyone can learn how to use cdjs, but the real deal is digging. Digging and keeping your mind open to new influences, new people and new genres.

There are two really nice initiatives here in Copenhagen that I think could inspire other parts of the world in terms of creating safer conditions for vulnerable people in the streets.
❁ Fixelancen: a van for drug users to safely do their drugs accompanied by professional staff and nurses. This way right about zero people die from overdoses and also it helps protect women and femmes in particular.
❁ The Red Van which is also a mobile harm reduction organization, it works the same way, but for street-based sex workers.
